Current Builds
Hi Folks,
New to the forum and excited over what I've learned about the SkiffAmerica. I was wondering... Are there any current builds in progress that are
being documented through photos or otherwise?
Regards,
Rob

I am currently building and at this time have the boat upside down preparing the bottom for application of xynole cloth. The easiest build pictures to
get to are those in the website skiffamerica.com
I will be happy to send some of mine if you send me your email address. Mine is genenkay@gmail.com
I do not have an orderly listing with descriptions but will be happy to explain any thing that you might not understand or have otherwise have a
question about.
Incidentally I am one of those building with the 3" taller cabin, but at the back only. I bought a kit that had already been cut out by someone who
needed to move and thought he could not finish the boat. I am 6'-3" and I think the other gent is about the same. I don't know if raising the front
of the cabin would create any difficulty other than Kilburn carefully laid out the plans to not waste materials and changes my require more material.
The extra 3" at the back didn't mess anything up. Some people, including me, widen the cockpit seats. It requires some zigling of material but not
any extra.
Have you bought the plans yet? If not, get after it. If so, welcome to the community.

I am currently building and am almost at the turn-over stage. However, I am building in unheated space, and frost is almost upon us here in Vermont,
so I am not going to turn over until spring. I have been taking photos, but they are not organized and I am not adept at uploading. They are very
similar to the photos on skiffamerica.com. It has gone pretty well so far, a lot of work but enjoyable. Visitors and even my wife are amazed by the
cool boat that is emerging.

Thanks Gene - both for the link and the opportunity to view some of your build pics.

I have all of my plywood epoxied with two coats and sanded. Parts all laid out. Both bulkheads cut out.
On week 1 of a 4 week trip. Hope to have boat done by the end of the year or sooner. I have big plans for next year!
I am in Heber Springs, Arkansas close to beautiful Greers Ferry Lake.

Thanks for the updates. Good to see activity with this very cool design. I would enjoy seeing some pics if you can tear yourselves away from building.

Rob,
Are you trying to get enough pictures to build without a set of plans?
I couldn't help but wonder. If so, you might ask builders if that is a good idea.
You don' t need any photos to build from the plans. In fact, there are photos in the plans where needed, and many drawings and sketches. Just ask
builders if that is true. It is.
Plans holders have access to the builder's corner where there are photos of the prototype under construction. Those were put on in the early days and
now there are many more photos posted in various places from many builders.
Are you still trying to decide if you want to build?
Is there anything specific you are looking for in the photos?

I'm just a very visual person and it's interesting to see how people approach their builds. I tend to approach projects by immersing myself in
information about them - particularly when I have no experience in said task. This would be a first build for me so I'm just trying to get a feel for
what sorts of tasks/challenges I'd be faced with. I don't consider myself particularly knowledgeable/experienced with tools but having said that, I
built a successful electric guitar a couple of years ago without prior experience. The scales a bit different but I have hacked up some wood before.

Thanks for both the question and the follow up about available information.

Rob,
The SkiffAmerica plans were done for just such a builder as yourself. Someone has said "Just follow the plans and you will end up with a nice
SkiffAmerica".
I know photos are supposed to be worth a thousand words, but oh how much would become clear if you had a set of plans to compare to the photos.
I happen to believe that looking at the plans tells more of the story than any number of photos. The plans are your guide when it comes to building.
The high school students who built the SkiffAmerica used no photos other than those in the plans. You can easily build a SkiffAmerica from the text
and plans but probably close to impossible to do it without. Even I would have to refer to my own plans if I were building another one, and I would
follow them to the letter. And I'd follow my own advice and not change a thing. Ten years has shown no reason to change anything. Kilburn

Hi ririzary,
I think you will find the Skiff America fun and challenging.
I am cuurently finishing my interior and about to flip her over.
I need to find a suitable trailer to move her out after painting, soon.
Here are a few pics of my build.

tomt,
You are at about the same place I am in the construction. I have been looking for a trailer. I have discovered that even though there are quite a few
dealers in my area (Heber Springs, Arkansas) not many seem anxious to sell just trailers. Also finding selection limited because the boat is long and
narrow.
Just purchased a Yamaha 25, so that I would get the 3 year extended warranty, on Thursday. That dealer is looking at trailers for me but I'm not sure
they really understand the requirements.
What trailers have anyone else used?
Tomt, where do you live?

Herb Story, a builder in Alabama had a custom trailer made by Eddie English Trailers in Milton, FL for around $1500 a couple of years ago. That
included Galvanizing. They are at eddieenglish.com

I agree finding a used trailer is tough. I have been looking for a galvanized trailer so I won't have any issues when I go to the Gulf. There are
some out there but you need to look them over carefully. I thought I found a good trailer last month and at a good price of 650.00 but when I
measured the width from wheel to wheel it wouldn't clear the garage door!
I am in Bham, AL, hoping to have an April 2010 launch
