Sitting Headroom
I was wondering what the headroom is like in the cabin space.
On a related note, I saw a post about a SkiffAmerica for sale that had been built with an additional 3" of headroom at the rear of the cabin.
I was wondering what Mr. Adams position is on such a mod? If this is acceptable, would an additional 3" across the cabin be acceptable?
Regards,
Rob

Rob,
Mr. Adams prefers the look of the boat with the original lines but if you are taller person the 3" added cabin height is OK. Raising it at the aft
end is where the height is most important. Several boats have been built with the added height and the casual observer is unlikely to notice the
difference.
I would consider raising the sheer line by a few inches in the middle area. If anyone building would like the measurements of a revised sheer line
please contact me and we can discuss. (Only for those actually building)
Your question about the measurement "across" the cabin leads me to wonder if you realize the cabin is as wide as the hull. Many people standing
right next to the boat have been fooled by the illusion of a separate structure as cabin. The same plywood panel making the hull side is also the
cabin side. The gunwale is the "optical" divide. I found many advantages of doing it that way.....much simplified building, simplified layout,
stronger, more cabin volume, lighter weight (less material required) etc.
Hope this helps,
Kilburn Adams

Thanks very much for the detail. It's a great help. And sorry for the confusing "across the cabin" wording. What I meant to ask was whether adding
an additional 3" headroom at both the back and the front of the cabin was acceptable. Both my wife and I are over 6'.

Rob

Rob,
Another thing to be aware of is that the area of the canvas top is considerably higher from the effects of the "crown" of the canvas supporting
framework and the extra height of the area inside the cabin rails. Sitting headroom is mainly considered to be the area under the canvas. Also
remember that during open times (canvas removed) that there is standing headroom for the tallest among us (all the way to the clouds) The area under
the canvas is four feet wide at the aft area of the cabin.
The builder of the second boat, Bill Dulin, is a little over six feet and will tell you that he does not feel it necessary for additional height. He
probably has as much experience with spending nights aboard as anyone.
There is enough room on the plywood panels to add the height to the full length of the cabin but again it would in my opinion detract from the nice
proportions as originally designed. Visibility concerns only the forward height due to the line of sight to the water ahead. I would not add height to
the forward portion as that is not where it is important for headroom and but would potentially affect the forward visibility. Bill and I discussed
this again this evening after finishing a session of flying our electric RC airplanes together and our conclusions are identical. I have always felt
that those who have not yet experienced the actual conditions of the original dimensions tend to be somewhat skeptical. That is the nature of not
knowing from experience. Many boat designs with normally pretty lines have been modified with higher cabins and the outcomes have not been so pretty.
Other issues too but these are the main things to consider.
Kilburn p.s. shorter people tend to bang their heads more and I have some funny stories about that, but those will have to wait.

Kilburn,
Once again, thanks for the input. It clears up a great deal. And far be it for me to upset the looks of a lovely design.
