Building in Phoenix

I doubt you have any builders in Phoenix, so I may be the first. I am trying to decide between the SkiffAmerica 20 and the Redwing 18. The SkiffAmerica seems a more robust boat from what I read. I am wondering which will be easier for a first time boat builder. Any opinions?

David,

A set of plans has gone to Phoenix area. If you are looking for the most detailed and inclusive set of plans then SkiffAmerica is for you. Many first time builders have successfully completed their SkiffAmericas. I have heard that the SkiffAmerica 20 plans are the best available. I tend to agree. My intent was to provide instructions to the builder so he could create an exact copy of the prototype in every way. Ever wonder why they all tend to be so similar? I included the detail down to the exact number of the paint used on the prototype. Wiring diagrams, instruments and countless other bits of info. are included. Just follow the plans and you will finish a spectacular project. If you would like to discuss further you may phone me for specific information. I presume you will get other responses from SA20 builders which will confirm what I have said here. Kilburn (the designer)

David, I am still in the beginning stages of building my SkiffAmerica 20. I have talked to a number of builders with finished boats. Most have had a lot of other boats. They cannot say enough good about this boat. If you have read the 20 Design Goals and have the same goals then this is definitely the boat to build. I looked at boat plans for about a year, bought several sets of plans, when I saw and read about SkiffAmerica 20 I knew I had found what I was looking for.

As far as finish goes, I think it is directly proportional to the amount of elbo grease applied, so to speak. If people follow the plans and directions it will all have two layers of epoxy applied and two or more coats of paint and varnish. Only the bottom has cloth applied.

I have to agree with Kilburn. The drawings and plan book are quite complete and I have trouble imagining that you will find a better set of plans or a boat that is more straight forward to build. I had a look at the info re the redwing on the web and I think the skiff america 20 will be an easier build. Building a boat is a big project, any boat, I am very happy with this design and the detail of the drawings and directions and I am sure you will be as well.

Very nice rig, especially for the area I hang out in. You have some protection against the cold wind and sometimes heavy rains. I just finished a 26 dory and am happy with it. Because of the weather and some other things, I think this is a superior project. I spend as much time fishing in Seward and Prince William sound as I can stealout. :) I winter in Apache Junction.
